Big East Basketball: Analyzing early 2019 recruiting classes
6. Seton Hall Pirates
National Ranking: No. 75
Seton Hall has been relatively active on the recruiting front so far this season but they do not necessarily have a “star” coming in on paper. With that said, though, there is plenty of potential for their two commits to make their mark in the Big East while with the Pirates. Seton Hall will not lose a ton of talent this offseason, so it is fair to say that these recruits might not play major roles right away but they represent part of the future of the program.
In the backcourt, DaShawn Davis seems to be an underrated recruit with a chance to be the next great guard under head coach Kevin Willard. Out of the Bronx, Davis is a 6-foot-3 shooting guard who can make plays on both ends of the floor. He is a hard-nosed defender with a handle that is only improving. He might not create for himself tremendously well but he can find holes in defenses and seek out open teammates. Davis definitely fits the mold of a prototypical guard under Willard and his development could be fun to watch even if he ranked at just No. 355 in the class. While playing for New York Lightning (EYBL) this past summer, Davis posted averages of 13.7 points (.486/.269/.657), 3.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
Additionally, Coach Willard landed a frontcourt piece in power forward Tyrese Samuel as the second commit in the class. A much more highly-regarded prospect, Samuel checks in at No. 180 in the country and is quite polished as a defensive-minded forward. He may never be the one filling up the scoring column but he can be a strong defender and should be able to clean the glass as a power forward. When necessary, he has a decent touch on his jumper as well. He averaged 7.0 points (.454/.227/.600) and 4.5 rebounds for UPLAY Canada on the EYBL circuit this past summer.
