NCAA Basketball: 3 reasons to bring back BracketBusters
3. These teams deserve the spotlight
The national college basketball television schedule can be telegraphed fairly easily on a week-to-week basis. Major conference teams take up a bulk of that, for obvious and justifiable reasons.
That doesn’t mean mid-majors don’t deserve a chance for the nation to watch them – and not just the Gonzagas and Nevadas of the world, either.
Not enough college basketball fans can name mid-major stars beyond Justin Wright-Foreman of Hofstra and Ja Morant of Murray State. The Wofford Terriers are arguably one of the most dangerous mid-majors in the nation, yet most don’t think to tune into Southern play during the week.
UC Irvine has won 11 straight games. Montana won ten straight games. New Mexico State has won 15 straight games. Belmont is 16-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference, which is the same exact record as Morant’s Racers.
None of these teams are making an impact on a national level, despite having the talent to put a real scare into major conference teams come March. ESPN and other channels have contracts with major conferences to put them on television and have the incentive to put the most prominent teams on each night to earn viewers and advertising bucks.
Putting the best mid-majors in a spectacle that has been sponsored by the likes of Sears and O’Reilly in the past should assuage all issues and put the best potential bracket busters on full display.
