Bracketology 2019: Most likely bid thieves heading into March Madness
6. Southern Conference
Safe at-large team: Wofford
Most likely bid thieves: East Tennessee State, Furman and UNC-Greensboro
Along with Gonzaga, Wofford is the other D-I program who went unbeaten in league play, going 18-0 in the SoCon. Similar to the Bulldogs, the Terriers also had some dominating performances to guarantee themselves a spot in the NCAA Tournament as a mid-major.
It hasn’t been easy for them, with several quality programs also having great campaigns. Along with Wofford, there are three other teams with 23+ total wins and 13+ victories in conference play. UNC-Greensboro is the second place team at 15-3 in the SoCon, with both Furman and ETSU also taking care of business against the rest of the conference. The trio has beaten up on each other, while Wofford has taken care of them all.
That doesn’t mean that this will be an easy conference tournament for the Terriers. Assuming the quarterfinals go accordingly, Wofford will have to beat two quality programs along the way to get the title. They had to go to overtime twice in conference play, so the Terriers looks more vulnerable than Gonzaga in their respective conference.
The other three teams in the SoCon are on the wrong side of the bubble currently so someone has to beat Wofford in the next week to make the tournament. Other bubble teams will be rooting for the Terriers to remain unbeaten in league play so that this league can remain to have one bid.
