St. John’s Red Storm

Current Bracketology Status: No. 12 seed.

St. John’s is not trending in the right direction at the moment but they are not a team that anyone will want to see in their region. Throughout this season, the Red Storm have been extremely inconsistent and that has led to some questionable stumbles along the way. When on their game, though, it is clear that this team has the talent level needed to make a deep run to perhaps the Elite Eight or further. I’m dead serious. While dropping out of the field entirely is still a possibility, they will extremely dangerous if their name is called on Selection Sunday.

This is due to the fact that the Red Storm are led by some superstar players. Most notably, Shamorie Ponds is one of the most electric stars in the nation. An elite scorer at all three levels who can get hot in a hurry, Ponds is averaging 19.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game this season. Should SJU make the NCAA Tournament, Ponds will be one of the best players in the dance.

And this does not even take into account the fact that the Red Storm feature several other top-tier players. St. John’s does not deploy a deep roster but their top five are more talented than just about any other team in the nation. LJ Figueroa, Mustapha Heron, Marvin Clark, and Justin Simon are all stars in their respective roles and can push SJU to a deep run in the Big Dance. Coaching is definitely a major question mark for the Johnnies but their talent level is high enough to reach the second weekend.
