Relationship with the Administration

Much has been discussed as the season started to unravel for Nebraska about the relationship that coach Miles has had with his Athletic Director Bill Moos. Moos was hired last season to replace the former Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst. Tim Miles was hired seven seasons ago by Tom Osborne, who was the Athletic Director before Eichorst. When the Husker coach first took the job, it looked to be a great fit as he got the Huskers ready to play and made the NCAA tournament in his second season. Since that season Nebraska has failed to live up to the lofty program expectations placed on it.

Moos, whom is the third athletic director that Miles has had in his tenure with Nebraska, has been said to be rather apathetic towards Miles and the basketball program. The Athletic Director has not attended many games as the head of the athletic department. The boss attended the first-round game in the Big Ten tournament against Rutgers, and then after the victory left, to go attend the California spring football game, where his son plays.

After Nebraska and their cinderella run through the Big Ten tournament was over, Moos let everyone know immediately after the game was over that he planned on releasing a statement. Everyone guessed that is was his announcement on who was going to lead the program in the coming years. This announcement was unplanned and caught everyone off guard, including the subject of the announcement the head coach. The announcement was letting everyone know that Moos was going to make his decision based on if Nebraska received a bid to the NIT on Sunday. He mentioned that once Nebraska’s season is complete the evaluation of the basketball program is over.

This may be the nail in the coffin for Miles tenure as the Nebraska head coach. The Huskers have made one NCAA tournament in 20 years. The man responsible for that tournament bid is Tim Miles. Since the current head coach has held his post their have been mixed opinions on him within the administration. The truth of the matter is the attention to any other program other than Volleyball and Football in Lincoln has always been lacking. The Basketball program has been criminally under supported by the administration for the last 20 years. Until that changes it is hard to see any respectable coach lasting in Lincoln for a long time.
