Bracketology Losers: Indiana, Texas, and Texas Tech struggle on Champ Week
LSU Tigers
It’s been a crazy up and down season for the Tigers. They went through the non-conference as more of an afterthought and not viewed as a serious contender. But led by sophomore guard Tremont Waters, LSU defeated both Kentucky and Tennessee to win the conference regular season title with a 16-2 record. They also vaulted up to a three seed but also had a real shot at grabbing the two seed depending on how the SEC Tournament results went.
By getting the top seed, LSU had the pleasure of avoiding both the Vols and Wildcats until the finals, giving them a major advantage. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t even make it past the quarterfinals, losing to a desperate Florida team that’s on the bubble. An early loss not only ended the Tigers’ hopes for a two seed, it could potentially slide them down to a four, which would have them seeing one of the ACC juggernauts in the Sweet 16.
But the program is dealing with bigger issues. Head coach Will Wade is currently out while the school is dealing with a report about him being wiretapped committing alleged NCAA violations. Ja’vonte Smart was also held out a game but was able to return for the SEC Tournament. It’s very likely that Wade won’t return to coaching this season so that may affect their seeding on Sunday as well.
LSU was riding high just a couple of weeks ago but now is not only distracted without their head coach but is also going to be getting a worse seeding than if they had made the SEC Tourney Finals. Just not a good week for the program on – or off the court.
