2019 NCAA Tournament: Lesser known players who will turn into national stars
By Brian Rauf
Myles Powell, Seton Hall
Magee might be the best shooter in the tournament but Powell is, for my money, the most exciting player in the field.
When he gets hot, Powell is known to pull up from a distance that is closer to mid-court than to the three-point line. He’s also extremely clutch, as he has shown time and time again this year.
Yet Powell has largely stayed out of the national picture despite his place as one of the best players in a power conference due to Seton Hall’s inconsistencies as a team. The junior was also Seton Hall’s fourth option last year. That has kept his name hidden – now he is taking full advantage of his time as this group’s leader.
Powell and the Pirates worked on changing that in the Big East Tournament, where he averaged 26 points per game and nearly led them to a conference title before coming up short against Villanova in the championship game. A message was sent, though.
Cinderella runs add to a player’s star power in March and Seton Hall is one of my favorites to win multiple games as a potential double-digit seed. They’ve won four of their last five games with three victories coming against ranked foes.
Powell will be the reason Seton Hall makes a run with his ability to take over a game. And, if that happens, you’ll be watching highlights of him for hours on SportsCenter.
