No. 6 UNC-Greensboro Spartans

It’s a trend to have a few SoCon teams on this list and certainly UNC-Greensboro deserves to be mentioned. I think what really threw us for a loop is that the Spartans were the first team off the board, but then again, not really. They too had the pleasure of playing LSU and losing. UNCG also went up against the number three team in the SEC, the Kentucky Wildcats. And those were their only two losses of the non-conference.

The Spartans went perfect in the Southern Conference if it wouldn’t have been for Wofford’s historic season and Furman tripping them up at home. They saw a seven, eight and six-game winning streak throughout the season. The Spartans finished second in the SoCon with a 15-3 record. They advanced all the way to the finals to play Wofford in hopes of not losing for a third time and having to sweat it out on Selection Sunday.

They did just that and learned their fate on Sunday evening. This UNCG team only lost once to a team that did not make the Tournament. Their other four losses came to teams that were seeded seven or better in the NCAA Tournament. Yet no bracketologist wanted to pull the trigger on the Spartans because they ranked outside the top-80 in everything besides the NET.

Our bracketologist Lukas Harkins had them in his “Others considered” list. Only two bracketologists had them listed in their field on Sunday afternoon on the BracketMatrix. We wanted to believe in their top-60 NET ranking, but every other site told us not to. The committee ultimately chose to rank them 69th, but Spartans fans knows that this was a season for the ages despite not going dancing.
