SEC Basketball: Top storylines for teams in the 2019 NCAA Tournament

3. Who’s the best team in the SEC: Tennessee or Kentucky?
All season, the top of the SEC has been in question. When the season began, Kentucky was expected to be the clear favorite. However, Tennessee constantly gained ground until they finally were considered the best team in the SEC. LSU was in consideration after being named regular season champions, but losing their coach likely eliminates them from contention.
Some might think that the SEC Tournament cemented Tennessee’s stake as the best team after they beat Kentucky, but I disagree. I am going to determine the best SEC team solely on who makes a deeper run in March. They’re too close right now, and the tournament is what fans will remember.
When I look at these teams, they both have Final Four potential. However, I think I prefer Kentucky to make a deeper run. They are battle-tested, and their region is nicer. Kentucky is used to having terrible draws, but they got lucky this year. It seems unlikely that they will be upset, and Tennessee would have to potentially play Virginia make it to the Final Four. Virginia is determined to prove that they are not the same team that was upset in the first round last year.
Both of these teams are great. They’re 2-seeds for a reason. However, I believe that Kentucky is built to potentially make it to the Final Four, while Tennessee has too many obstacles ahead of them. The Volunteers might have more top-end talent in Grant Williams, but the core that the Wildcats have built should be enough to carry them.
