Kansas Basketball: 3 Keys to victory against Northeastern in Round of 64
By Chris Kern
Three-Point Shooting
This is a Kansas team that really struggles to shoot the ball from three-point range. They have been inconsistent all season long and since they lost LaGerald Vick, they don’t have that guy who can catch fire from there to give them a boost.
Kansas’ leaders in three-point percentage are Devon Dotson and Dedric Lawson who are tied at 37%. Those two guys are most known for the other areas of their game but they have been forced to improve from three-point range and they have.
They do have other guys who are capable of knocking down shots such as Ochai Agbjai and Quentin Grimes, but they’ve both been so inconsistent so it’s hard to trust them. Charlie Moore is another guy who is in his first season since transferring from California but he has really struggled to get anything going despite having impressive range with his shooting.
The Jayhawks need to knock down shots in this game but even more importantly they have to defend the three-point line. This team has lost at the hands of three-point barrages’ this season and they need to keep that from happening in this game.
The Huskies absolutely fill it up from three-point range as their 39% from deep ranks 13th in college basketball. It’s not just one guy you have to account for, they have so many guys who can shoot the ball such as Vasa Pusica and Jordan Roland that you have to stay locked in defensively for 40 minutes.
You have to defend inside as well but the three-point line is especially important for most games like this, even before you take into account how well they shoot the ball. So many of these upsets happen because the lower seed catches fire from three-point range, so if Kansas can keep that from happening they should be able to get the win.
