Saint Joe’s Basketball: Potential candidates to replace Phil Martelli as next coach
By Pan Karalis
John Becker
Becker has put together a perennial America East champion with Vermont. The Catamounts have won either the regular season or tournament championship in the AEC (or both) five times in his eight seasons. But Becker has been at UVM in one capacity or another since 2006, and has no connection to Philadelphia or the current Saint Joseph’s’ administration, and that job would likely be much more difficult than his current in Burlington. Becker might one day be lured to a high major school, where I think he could have a bigger impact than on Hawk Hill.
Ryan Odom
Another America East coach, I don’t really see Odom‘s resume as being deep enough to be considered, but I’ve seen his name tossed around a few times. I guess name recognition is something you earn when you coach the first sixteen seed to a first round upset in the tournament.
Mark Schmidt
The St. Bonaventure coach has been talked about, likely because of the familiarity Hawks fans have with him. And he is an interesting name; if you can recruit the way he does in snow-covered Olean, New York, chances are you can put together a nice roster in Philly. I don’t think there’s much of a remote possibility, though. I don’t really know what would compel him to leave St. Bonaventure on a lateral move to Saint Joe’s.
Patrick Beilein
John’s son Patrick, after playing for his dad at West Virginia and having a short pro career, has cut his teeth as a DI assistant and head coach in the division two ranks. He’s currently coaching Le Moyne, and has already won a number of coach of the year awards at that level. It’s an interesting name that’s being tossed around for the Niagara opening, but I don’t know where the connection is for Saint Joe’s.
