Saint Joe’s Basketball: Potential candidates to replace Phil Martelli as next coach
By Pan Karalis
Fran Dunphy
This suggestion is so ridiculous that I can’t even believe I’ve seen it more than once. If Saint Joe’s hires a 70 year-old that was just let go for underperforming at a rival school, they deserve to keep languishing in mediocrity. And if you think Dunphy would even consider taking the job of his heart-broken personal friend, you’re wrong. Don’t be surprised to see his name linked to the La Salle AD chair, though.
Tim Legler
The Big 5 Hall of Famer was rumored to be in the mix for the position at his alma mater La Salle last year, and that seemed entirely possible. St. Joe’s hiring a 52 year-old television analyst that has never coached at any level? Completely ridiculous.
Fran McCaffrey
These next two wouldn’t be completely ridiculous if they were to be fired from their current positions, but it doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen. After one of McCaffrey’s trademark meltdowns got him suspended this past season, some Iowa fans began to question Fran’s future with the Hawkeyes. White Magic could come back to Philly and throw all the tantrums he wanted. We love that here. But he was just an overtime loss away from a Sweet 16, so don’t expect him to go anywhere anytime soon.
Pat Chambers
Chambers seemed all but fired when Penn State looked like they weren’t going to win a single Big Ten game this season, but a little run at the end of the year looks to have saved his job, at least for now. With his strong pipeline to Roman Catholic High School in Philly, Chambers could probably build a major player in the A10 on Hawk Hill, but it looks like the timing just didn’t work out.
