NCAA Tournament 2019: Ranking the upcoming Sweet 16 matchups
(1) Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. (4) Florida State Seminoles
Gonzaga was the top seed that, in my opinion, played the best during the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs looked particularly impressive while dismantling their first two opponents and star player Brandon Clarke is showing why he was the best player on the west coast throughout the year. With that said, though, they have arguably one of the toughest Sweet 16 matchups in Florida State.
The Seminoles, who are coached by Leonard Hamilton, are a tough matchup for just about everyone due to their length and athleticism. It is very difficult to attack this defensive unit because of how easily they can switch and how they lock down each of the top offensive options for their opponents. Florida State is ranked 10th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency as they prevent scoring around the rim tremendously well. Additionally, it is important to mention that FSU has only lost to North Carolina and Duke (once each) since Jan. 20.
Florida State is clearly playing at a high level and they are coming off of a dominating performance against Murray State in the second round. The Seminoles will prove to be a massive threat for Gonzaga even though they are also playing at a high level. Josh Perkins might be the player to watch for the Bulldogs in this one as the steadying point guard that guides the team through difficult times.
