March Madness: Why lack of Madness might be a good thing moving forward
Storylines remaining
Every sport movie tells us that we as a fan don’t just love exciting games, but the story underlying the action that we see play out on the court and on TV during March Madness.
While bracket busters are stories in and of themselves, this year we are looking at some pretty interesting stories that could carry through till we crown a winner.
Take Duke for example. They alone have some really intriguing narratives to follow:
- Where does a National Title rank Zion all-time among the greatest Freshman?
- Should they fall flat without a title, was this Duke team a let down?
- What if Duke and North Carolina face off in the Finals?
These threads are captivating enough in their own right to keep me wanting and asking for more. And Duke isn’t the only team left in the field that provides us with something to really latch on to as things begin to play out.
Heck, pretty much EVERY team has something of note that allows us to sink our teeth in to.
Does LSU prove the public wrong and continue to march forward throughout the tournament without Will Wade? Is this the year Gonzaga finally reaches the mountain top? Can Virginia wash away the UMBC stain with a National title? Can a PJ Washinton-less Kentucky squad get the job done? Are the Tar Heels destined to clash with the Blue Devils in the finals? These potential headlines are tailor made for March Madness.
That’s just scratching the surface.
The excitement lies within the details for the fans as we sit around our TV’s, computers, iPad’s, etc. to watch the games play out.
It’s like wrestling; someone who isn’t a fan can watch a wrestling show but not really feel attached to it. But if you knew that it was Triple H who ran over Stone Cold Steve Austin to keep him away from the world title picture…then suddenly the entire dynamic changes!
So whether it’s The Rock or Coby White, Vince McMahon or Coach K…if you think about it, there’s more drama than you’d expect to have at this point in the 2019 NCAA tournament.
And that sounds like some Madness to me.
