Coby White – UNC

I cannot lie, prior to the Tournament, my pick to win the 2019 National Championship was the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, and my Final Four Most Outstanding Player pick was Coby White. I felt White went very under the radar this season due to all the potential NBA prospects in the Atlantic Coast Conference, specifically RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson. The freshman guard was sensational this season for the Tar Heels, and that was no different in the NCAA Tournament.

White has handles that remind me of a young Kyrie Irving. Do not take that wrong, I am not saying White can currently dribble as well as the NBA point guard with the best handles, but he has real talent and it comes from his ability to play with the ball on a string. Whereas Jerome is a more of a true, pass first point guard, White plays with a scoring mindset. His assist to turnover ratio in the NCAA Tournament was only 2:1, but he averaged close to 15 points per game. White crashes the glass too, recording five or more rebounds in four of the Tar Heels’ last five games.

I would argue had Ja Morant not been in the NCAA this year, that White would have been in the discussion as the best all around point guard and maybe drawn some of the Russell Westbrook comparisons. White played himself onto the All-ACC Tournament team with his play this March and may have just played himself into the NBA draft lottery too.
