Big Ten Basketball: Cassius Winston, Tyler Cook lead All-NCAA Tournament team
Carsen Edwards – Purdue
2019 NCAA Tournament Stats: 34.8 PPG, 4.8 APG, 2.0 RPG
2018-19 Season Stats: 24.3 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.9 APG
Edwards by far was the Purdue Boilermakers’ best player on the court in 2018. He earned All-Big Ten First Team honors, Naismith Trophy top-10 semifinalist, Sporting News Third-Team All-America selection, USBWA First-Team All-District selection, USBWA Second-Team All-America selection and NABC First-Team All-District selection among many other accolades.
He also finished in the top 10 in these Big Ten categories: 21.1 points per game (first in the Big Ten), 2.9 threes made per game (First in the Big Ten), 82.6 percent shooter from the free throw line (fourth in the Big Ten) 1.5 steals per game (tied for fifth in the Big Ten), and 35.3 minutes per game (fifth in the Big Ten).
Carsen Edwards has proven time and time again that he could single-handedly take over games willing the Boilermakers to victory. He did just that with a 29-point and two 42-point performances in the NCAA Tournament. Since he was the best player on the team nine times out of 10, the defensive plan for most teams was just let him do what he does and make sure no one else can hurt you. The Boilermaker basketball program is going to miss his production mightily since he has declared for the 2019 NBA Draft.
I’ll be interested to see how he does at the NBA Scouting Combine and NBA Summer League. An NBA team is going to land a great player in Carsen Edwards. Sure, the NBA game will be an adjustment, but he has all the skills necessary to translate into a solid guard at the next level.
