2. Fred Hoiberg to Nebraska

Say it with me. Jumping from college to NBA coach is not always the best decision. Hoiberg is yet another example of a great college coach who looked for greener pastures in the NBA but was not very successful. Hoiberg did a great job at his alma mater Iowa State going 115-56 in five seasons and even took the Cyclones to the Sweet 16 in 2014.

He would jump to the NBA and coach the Bulls for four mostly forgettable years. He would go 115-155 and was shown the door. He would be shown the door after just 24 games in the 2018-19 season. The NBA didn’t seem to be the right fit for him, but he was finally snatched up by Nebraska to take over for the fired Time Miles.

Even with the collapse this year at Nebraska, Tim Miles didn’t do anything horrible during his time in Lincoln. He built the Cornhuskers to respectability and had the competing at a high level in the Big Ten for most of his tenure. But he couldn’t quite get over the hump and was shown the door.

The Cornhuskers pounced on getting Hoiberg and he seems to bring instant credibility to Nebraska. But how quickly will he get them going back in the right direction? Hoiberg has been known as a great recruiter and should be able to get some good players to the Cornhuskers. This next year might not be when he gets them to the top, but the general consensus is he should be able to make them a contender soon. It will be interesting to see how quickly he makes the relevant and what effect he has on the rest of the Big Ten. It will start with what kind of recruiting class he can bring in for his first year in Lincoln.
