NCAA Basketball: 10 Coaches who have overstayed their welcome entering 2019-20
By Bryan Mauro
6. Chris Mooney – Richmond
The Richmond Spiders have been led by the same man for 14 seasons. Chris Mooney has had a largely unsuccessful tenure as the coach of the Spiders. Only making two NCAA tournaments in 14 years would not be acceptable at any school but it appears Mooney is still riding the momentum that his sweet 16 appearance produced.
Spider fans have become restless and have called for Mooney’s job quite vocally. The coach had the two NCAA tournament wins but the other 12 seasons as mentioned have not been good enough. During his tenure the Spiders have averaged 18 wins per year. Those 18 wins have not come with much substance, however. In his 14 seasons Two NCAA tournaments and two NIT’s are all the Spiders can show for it.
Just like every other coach on this list, the coach has experienced a ton of attrition. The Spiders entered this season, one in which they won 12 games in a very down year for the Atlantic 10, without their leading scorer from the previous year in Khwan Fore. Fore ended up transferring to Louisville and helping Chris Mack get his team back to the tournament. The Spiders have not been good for quite some time under Mooney and the program appears stagnant at this point. That is never a good direction for any program to be headed in.
The Richmond job is one that presents a great opportunity for a low mid major coach looking to get his feet wet in an upper conference. The Atlantic 10 is usually an extremely competitive conference, and Richmond can be the next team to take a step forward with the right hire.
