5. Terry Porter – Portland

When the Pilots hired Portland legend and new head coach Terry Porter, the excitement was put back into the program. However, three years into the tenure it looks like the hire was a disaster. Porter didn’t play his college basketball in Portland, but he had an extremely successful career with the Portland Trail Blazers and the city adopted him as one of their own. In a town that supports basketball like Portland does the hire made a lot of sense.

In the first three years the Pilots have only been able to secure 28 total wins and this season was the worst of the three. Porter and Pilots only won seven games total and went 0-16 in the West Coast Conference. The first season was shaping up to be a decent season for Porter as he had one of the best backcourts in the WCC with Alec Wintering and Jazz Johnson. Wintering got hurt and that ended any hope Portland had of making noise in the conference. After the first season Johnson elected to transfer and move on to Nevada.

Porter is the shortest tenured coach on this list and he is on the list because he has not yet made Portland competitive and the team is far away from winning currently. One thing to keep an eye on that many will say should keep Porter off this list is, Portland has a tremendous recruiting class coming in next year. Many believe this is the sign of the tide turning for Porter. Currently, the Pilots seem to have been bitten by the former NBA coach who have failed in college bug.
