NCAA Basketball: 5 impactful under-the-radar recruits for 2019-20
By Brian Rauf
Chandler Lawson, SF, Oregon
Lawson and Akok have a lot of similar characteristics – tall, thin, and athletic with loads of potential. Akok is more developed at this stage of his development but Lawson is going to have plenty of chances to shine in Oregon’s system.
At 6-8, Lawson’s size, wingspan, and athleticism allow him to be a true lockdown defender on the wing. He’s not strong enough to handle opposing big men inside but fits the mold the identity Oregon developed in March – a long, athletic, dominant defensive team.
That said, Lawson’s most dangerous when he’s attacking the basket. His length and ball-handling ability make him virtually unstoppable when he gets in transition, and he’s good for a highlight reel dunk or two. Not a three-point shooter yet, Lawson still typically finds a way to be effective in the half court with his ball-handling and rebounding.
There are going to be a lot of minutes available at the small forward position if Louis King decides to keep his name in the NBA Draft, and if that happens, Lawson is a good candidate to fill them.
