NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Ranking 2019 guard RJ Hampton’s final 4 teams
By Chris Kern
2. Kansas Jayhawks
Now we get into the two schools that are considered the favorites to land Hampton at this time. The Kansas Jayhawks have an opening in their starting backcourt alongside Devon Dotson and they also have the players to compete for a championship if they’re able to get Hampton to play for them.
Their current recruiting class isn’t up to Kansas’ standards at all. According to 247sports, it’s just the 59th best class in the country and the 8th best in the conference. They only have two recruits currently committed with guards Isaac McBride and Christian Braun both being ranked just outside the top-100.
A couple of reasons the recruiting class isn’t up to par is because of the FBI investigation, as well as the Bill Self to the NBA rumors. A similar situation affected Arizona recruiting class this past season and when these rumors come about the recruits don’t want any chance of being ineligible so they decide it’s better to avoid the school.
While Hampton would succeed at Kansas this is more important for the Jayhawks that they land this commitment. They have some solid players on the wing in Ochai Agbaji and Marcus Garrett, but they need a star who can play alongside Dotson in the starting lineup. Dotson is currently testing the NBA Draft process so it isn’t for sure he’ll be back in Lawrence next season, but it would be a major surprise if he decided not to return.
The ability to play for one of the top programs in the country and be a featured player gives the Jayhawks a very good chance to land RJ Hampton. While they currently aren’t the favorite, Kansas fans should be confident in Bill Self’s chances at landing Hampton for next season.
