Temple is looking for their 3rd coach in over 30 years

Fran Dunphy has been a part of basketball in Philadelphia for the last 35 consecutive years, the last 14 of which came at Temple where he replaced legendary coach John Chaney. This past year he announced his retirement after 10 20-win seasons and eight trips to the NCAA Tournament with the Owls including six consecutive berths from 2007-2013. Dunphy is one of the few coaches to have success following a legend, with the 270 career wins at Temple.

With the Owls looking for just their 3rd coach since Chaney was hired in 1982, familiarity with the program was likely more important than it would be at another institution. Temple settled on someone fans of Big Five basketball know well, former Temple guard Aaron McKie. McKie played for Temple under Chaney from 1991-1994. After a lengthy NBA career, McKie had a stint on the staff of the Philadelphia 76ers, he spent the last six seasons as an assistant on Dunphy’s staff. With the appointment of McKie, Temple is hoping the transition is as seamless and successful as it was when they brought Dunphy over from Penn. Time will tell if McKie can buck the trend like Dunphy, and have success following a legend.
