NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Pros and cons for Jalen Cone’s final teams
Tennessee Volunteers
Pros
The Vols are at an all-time high as a program, coming off of a 31-win season and a trip to the Sweet 16. And even though there’s a strong chance that their top three scorers (Admiral Scofield, Grant Williams, and Jordan Bone), this team shouldn’t take a big step downward. Five-star combo guard Josiah-Jordan James may end up being a one-and-done after what could be a great individual campaign.
Throughout his entire college coaching career, Rick Barnes has sent countless players to the NBA. That includes TJ Ford from Texas years ago, who has the same build and size and Cone. Seeing the success of point guards under him makes the Vols are sound option.
Cons
There are a couple of negatives for Cone to think about. One is that he’d have to settle for limited minutes as a freshman with rising seniors Lamonte Turner and Jordan Bowden coming back. Depending on how James is used, it may be better for Cone to redshirt.
But the real question is the status of Barnes at Tennessee. He admitted that had things gone accordingly, he would’ve been the head coach at UCLA by now. Does that mean that he could be on the move the following offseason? For a recruit considering all programs, that has to be a concerning issue.
