Pittsburgh Panthers

It would very interesting for Sy to end up back in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Second year Pitt head coach Jeff Capel has certainly hit the grown running and has turned the Panthers rebuild into  closer to a three-year rebuild than a five-year rebuild.

Pros

Pittsburgh offers the opportunity for Sy to start from the day he sets foot on campus. The only front court players on the roster currently are Terrell Brown, Kene Chukwuka and incoming freshman Karim Coulibaly. Brown has the potential to be a player in the ACC, averaging 5.7 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19 minutes per game last year. He is a pretty good rim protector as well, averaging 3.8 blocks per 40 minutes. Chukwuka is an effort guy of the bench, Sy’s arrival would most likely lead to Kene being lightly used. Coulibaly will need some time for development which is fine because Sy will be a RS Junior this season.

If Sy ends up at Pitt I would assume that he and Brown would basically split the pivot spot. It would not shock me to see them both get 18-20 minutes per game and Coulibaly logging some minutes at the four when Capel prefers to go big against a team like UNC or Florida State.

Cons

I really like Terrell Brown. I think he has a fair bit of upside to his game, he just needs to maintain focus for the entire game. If you look at his numbers and figure them for 32 minutes per game, you have a player that averages 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2.85 blocks per game. That’s Elijah Thomas for Clemson during his junior season. Brown has also been playing against ACC level competition for the past two seasons while Pitt rebuilds. What has Sy been doing? Sitting out a year and playing JUCO. I like the development he has shown, but the competition jump is nothing that should be understated.
