Michigan Basketball: 5 best candidates to replace head coach John Beilein
By Erik Mauro
Juwan Howard
A universally loved figure in Ann Arbor, Howard was a member of the Fab Five, played in the NBA and has been an assistant with the Miami Heat for the past six seasons.
A National Champion runner-up and a two-time NBA Champion, Howard is a winner. In a coaching cycle that saw former NBA players turned coaches go back to college jobs, this wouldn’t be a bad hire at all. Howard knows what it takes to win at Michigan.
The drawback is that he has never coached at a college level and has been involved exclusively with the NBA for 25 years, so how is his recruiting prowess? Would he know how to sell the job? How will he able to manage college kids on a day-to-day basis, like he doesn’t have to in the NBA?
Howard is a safe hire, due to his history and pedigree as a player. However, he should come with an asterisk that says “buyer beware.”
