NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Marquette commit Symir Torrence reclassifies to 2019

More recruiting tidbits

  •  Consensus top-75  2021 point guard Daeshun Ruffin (Calloway, Miss) committed to Auburn on June 3. The diminutive 5’9″ lead guard erupted for 51 points against the NY Renaissance in an EYBL matchup earlier this spring. Ruffin averaged 25.8 points per game on 44.3 percent shooting and 41.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc during the EYBL season. He added 5.3 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game to those averages. The Calloway (Miss.), who is Auburn’s first commitment from the class of 2021, held five other offers — Alabama, Miss. State, Houston, Ole Miss, and Southern Miss.
  • North Dakota freshman Jal Bijiek is leaving the program. The 6’7″ small forward averaged 1.9 points and 1.2 rebounds in less than six minutes of action in 17 appearances. He did make a respectable 44.4% of his shots from the field and 46.2% of his attempts from beyond the arc. The Des Moines (Iowa) product originally committed to Tulsa but chose to spend one year at a postgraduate school before signing with UND.
  • Six-foot-9 power forward Zach Martini (2020) received an offer to play for Yale on June 3. Martini now holds nine offers — all of them from low-major programs — and eight of the schools are located on the East Coast with Cal Poly being the exception.
  • 2020 three-star prospect Mason Hooks (Studio City, CA) committed to Princeton on June 3. He didn’t have any scholarship offers but had drawn interest from Georgetown, Harvard, Tulane, Rice, Yale, and Brown among others. The 6’9″ center, who is a solid two-way player, averaged 16.1 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks last season for Harvard-Westlake High School. Hooks is the Tigers first 2020 commit.

  • Five-star 2021 combo guard Drew Askew continues to draw interest from major programs, receiving an offer from TCU on June 3. He now holds offers from Arizona, Florida, Texas, Oregon, USC, Louisville, San Diego St., and St. John’s.
