NBA Draft 2019: Top 25 undrafted players since 2000
Not many players have nearly 1,000 games played in their NBA careers after being undrafted. But that’s where Jose Calderon is at after a 14-year NBA career that’s still active.
He spent the bulk of it with the Toronto Raptors, becoming a full-time starter in year three in the league. The Spanish point guard became one of the best passers in the league, averaging a career-high 8.9 assist per game twice around 30 minutes per contest.
He wasn’t “just” a passer either, scoring in double figures in six seasons, topping at 12.8 points per game. He shot around 40 percent the entire time from distant (led the NBA in 2012-13 with 46 percent) and is an all-time great shooter from the charity stripe, going for 87 percent in his career.
Even after leaving the Raptors, Calderon still managed to be an NBA starting point guard, leading the Dallas Mavericks, the New York Knicks and even the Cleveland Cavaliers as recently as 2017-18. He most recently played for the Detroit Pistons, not starting a single game for the first time in his NBA career.
Since he’s turned 38 years old in September, there’s a strong chance that Calderon has played in his last NBA game. But he’s the best pure passer among all undrafted players since 2000 and created a great legacy for himself. Who knows, maybe his game would’ve been able to flourish even more in this era of spacing and fast-paced offense?
Career stats (895 games): 8.9 points, 5.8 assists, 2.4 rebounds per game
