NCAA Basketball: Top 25 most impactful freshmen for 2019-20 season
By Brian Rauf
15) Harlond Beverly, PG/SG, Miami
Beverly projects to serve as the starting backcourt partner for Chris Lykes this coming season, and he has the skill to a significant impact right away.
Offensively, there isn’t much Beverly can’t do. He’s a good enough ball-handler and passer to comfortably play point guard at times, and he knows how to use his length, quickness, and explosiveness to attack the basket and create shots for himself. Beverly also knows how to make an impact off the ball, allowing him to play either guard position.
The 6-4, 170-pounder’s physical tools give him plenty of defensive upside as well, but there are two main areas he needs to improve if he’s going to fulfill his potential for the Hurricanes.
Like most freshmen, Beverly needs to add weight and strength to his frame. An offseason/preseason working with Miami‘s training staff will certainly help with that as he needs to be able to handle the physical play of the ACC. Beverly’s jumper is also inconsistent at this stage of his career.
Miami desperate needs more playmakers and scorers to go along with Lykes in their lineup and Beverly provides that along with the size Lykes lacks at 5-7. He’ll be relied on as a secondary offensive option right away.
