9) Kai Jones, C, Texas

Shaka Smart has developed a reputation for developing NBA-level big men from Jarrett Allen to Mo Bamba to Jaxson Hayes, a projected lottery pick in this month’s draft. Kai Jones appears to be the next in line.

Like the three big men listed previously, Jones is lanky (6-10, 205 lbs.) but is a high quality athlete who has extreme upside as a lob catcher and rim protector. Jones adds a new element, however, as he’s a reliable shooter from just inside the arc, so it won’t be a surprise to see him consistently knocking down three-pointers in Austin. He also has some developed post moves around the basket.

The biggest weakness in Jones’ game is his lack of strength. For all his skill, he can easily get pushed around and get placed out of position. Adding weight and strength is an absolute must, something Smart and the Texas program will help with.

Coming off their NIT title, the Longhorns expect to finally take a step forward under Smart this year. Another season in the bottom half of the Big 12 and on the NCAA Tournament bubble won’t cut it.

Texas has a roster that can meet those expectations but had a hole in the middle Jones is being expected to fill. He’ll have the opportunity to make a real impact with his size, skill, and athleticism and, if he can become a consistent producer, the Longhorns will be in good shape.
