Texas Basketball: Breaking down the 2019 recruiting class
Will Baker – Austin, TX
C | 7-foot-0 | 235 lbs | No. 34 overall
One of the most polished players in the 2019 class, Will Baker comes in with fans expecting immediate contributions. He is a true seven-footer and already brings plenty of size and all-around game at the center position that is hard to match up with. In addition to being able to score well around the rim, he stretches the floor uniquely well and can be a difficult cover as a result. He is also a superb passer and is growing as a ball handler, which will make him all the more dangerous.
Due to these skills, Baker is among the elite-tier of offensively-ready players for the collegiate game. He can impact each contest in so many different ways on that end of the floor that he will be a terror to defend from Day 1. In addition, he uses his body well on the glass to come down with both offensive and defensive rebounds. Texas has boasted several top freshmen big man in the past and Baker is the next in line.
Baker does need to develop a bit on the defensive end of the floor, though. Although he certainly has plenty of size and positions himself relatively well, he is not a great rim-protector and could need some extra help around the basket during his first campaign. No matter what, though, he is the top-rated player in Texas’ class and should be a very strong offensive weapon right away.
Texas’ incoming recruiting class might only consist of three commits, but it has the potential to be extremely impactful. Each newcomer is ranked in the nation’s top-75 and looks poised to find playing time right away. Could this group help take the Longhorns to new heights under Coach Smart? We will find out.
