Tevin Mack transfers to Clemson

The Clemson Tigers landed coveted transfer Tevin Mack on June 10. Ranked the 24th best grad transfer by ESPN, Mack should be able to come in and contribute for a Tigers’ team that lost four of their top five players from last year’s squad that went 20-14 overall. To make matters worse, UNC Asheville transfer Jonathan Baehre, who sat out last season, recently tore a ligament in his knee and is out indefinitely.

Mack struggled last season following a breakout sophomore campaign. The 6’6 wing averaged 9.0 points, on 41.7% shooting from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc, along with 3.3 rebounds in 20.6 minutes of action for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He scored in double-figures on 16 occasions, topping the 20-point mark four times.

Mack is athletic, has a scorer’s mentality and can light up a scoreboard when he is knocking down shots, particularly from beyond the arc. The Columbia (SC) native originally signed with VCU out of high school and then followed coach Shaka Smart to Texas before playing a single game with the Rams.

Mack is the fourth transfer that coach Brad Brownell has brought in this offseason. Brownell, who has led the Tigers to a postseason berth the last three seasons, has also inked Tulsa grad transfer Curran Scott, Nick Honor (Fordham) and Khavon Moore (Texas Tech). Honor and Moore will have to sit out this upcoming season.

Including the four transfers, the Tigers will have seven newcomers on the roster. The other newcomers include freshmen Al-Amir Dawes, Chase Huntington, and Alex Hemenway.

Other recruiting tidbits

  • Benson Lin committed to Bryant on June 12. The 6’4 shooting guard, who hails from Tawain — aka the “next” Jeremy Lin — averaged 17.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists last season as a post-graduate at St. Andrews (RI). The former Manhattan commit also drew interest from Stetson, Drexel, and Stetson.
  • Penn State’s backcourt got a boost with the recent addition of grad transfer Curtis Brown. The 6’4 combo guard averaged 8.1 points along with three rebounds and an assist for Oklahoma State in 2018-19. He also has spent two seasons at Indiana. Brown is expected to compete with Myrean Jones for a starting spot alongside Myles Dread.

  • The Cincinnati Bearcats have had quite a week. The Bearcats officially lost Logan Johnson and Eliel Nsoseme. Johnson, who averaged less than seven minutes a game for UC as a freshman, landed at Saint Mary’s. Johnson selected the Gaels over Fresno State. Meanwhile, Nsoseme, who averaged 1.3 points along with 3.2 caroms in 29 games as a sophomore, has transferred to Georgia State. The Bearcats also received a verbal commitment from 2020 guard Mike Saunders Jr. and offered a scholarship to 2020 guard Anthony Leal.
