NCAA Basketball: Pros and cons of Kerry Blackshear’s final group of teams
Texas A&M Aggies
Pros
When coaches move on to other programs, it’s normal for their best players to follow as transfers. Recent examples from this offseason alone include 20 ppg scorer David Jenkins going to UNLV and Jake Toolson going back to BYU to stay with their respective head coaches. Blackshear sticking with head coach Buzz Williams, the player who developed into who he is now isn’t a far-fetched move.
The Aggies aren’t depleted either, returning their top three scorers from last season. Savion Flagg, TJ Starks and Wendell Mitchell are a very good set of perimeter players who would complement Blackshear well. The big man would still be the featured player on offense and with a familiar coaching staff would be very beneficial for him.
Cons
Even with a solid incoming recruiting class and the expected development of the returning guards, Texas A&M will still be fighting to finish over .500 overall. The arrival for Blackshear would help but it would turn the team into an NCAA Tournament team? Of the five SEC schools on the list, the Aggies are either the worst or second-worst among them. With better options on the table, it’s hard to see Blackshear settle for Texas A&M, regardless of how strong the bond is between him and Coach Williams
