NCAA Basketball: Updated way-too-early 2019-20 top-25
7. Maryland Terrapins
Maryland was one of the youngest teams in the nation during this past season but they still put together a great campaign as a result of their talent. Now, with the majority of the roster returning, the Terrapins will be slightly more experienced and improved after a full offseason. Even without Bruno Fernando, this roster looks absolutely stacked and head coach Mark Turgeon has to be excited about the potential. He has a senior leader at point guard in Anthony Cowan Jr. and plenty of scorers and defenders alongside, including a junior wing in Darryl Morsell.
In order for the Terrapins to reach this lofty prediction, they will need to see breakout performances from the rising sophomore class. Jalen Smith, Eric Ayala, and Aaron Wiggins all put together solid freshmen campaigns a year ago and it is time for them to take the next step. This trio will be called upon to make big plays throughout the year and they will need to answer. Maryland’s core pieces, unlike some other top-10 teams, have already played at least one year of college ball together and there shouldn’t be any chemistry issues.
Maryland might not be the favorite to win the Big Ten at this point in time but they are in that group of contenders. The Terps are still fairly young but they are extremely talented and they might have what it takes to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Watch out.
