NCAA Basketball: Updated way-too-early 2019-20 top-25
21. Purdue Boilermakers
Purdue lost Carsen Edwards and Ryan Cline this offseason but I am not selling any stock. Head coach Matt Painter is easily one of the best in the business and I am betting on the idea that the Boilermakers almost never post a “down” season. After landing top-3 NCAA Tournament seeds in back-to-back years, they might take a step back during this coming campaign but it will not be a tumble. Purdue returns an experienced group of role players, and it would be a mistake to think that someone will not have a breakout season.
Trevion Williams and Nojel Eastern are at the top of my list for potential breakouts. These two showed flashes of greatness throughout this past season and should look to take the next step alongside their teammates. Sophomore guards Eric Hunter Jr. and Aaron Wheeler could also prove to be extremely impactful while Matt Haarms holds down the paint. In addition, the program also landed highly-touted transfer Jahaad Proctor. While playing for High Point last season, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 19.5 points (.464/.331/.771), 3.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. He will hopefully provide a solid scoring punch to the rotation.
Purdue is, quite simply, one of the most consistent programs in the nation. Their roster might not jump out as elite for this coming season but Coach Painter will have this team ready to succeed. Even if they are not a top-25 team, it would be a surprise if they were not dancing in March. The Boilermakers just always seem to find a way to get it done.
