14. Brandon Newman (Purdue – SG)

An exciting young guard from Valparaiso, Indiana, Newman is a 6’4 shooter who’s ready to compete in the Big Ten. He took visits to Indiana and Ohio State, but committed to Matt Painter and the Boilermakers in November, also receiving offers from a host of area schools.

Above all, Newman is a shooter, and he can knock down shots from all over the court, even from deep range. He’s lacking a bit in size, but makes up for it with defensive intensity. He’s not the most athletic shooting guard, but has the ability to work around defensive schemes and is great at catch-and-shoot. If he continues to work on his game, he’s got the potential to become one of the Big Ten Basketball’s most elite shooters. He’s not expected to be much of a ball handler; improving his defense and continuing to develop his offensive game are his keys to becoming a star player.

Carsen Edwards is gone, but the Boilermakers have replaced him with a similarly exciting shooter. He might be buried on a talented depth chart early on, but Newman will certainly find his way to big minutes if he can get comfortable quickly at the college level. It’ll be interesting to see how the Boilermakers fare going forward, but expect great things from this team next year. If Newman is playing solid minutes, then that’s a great sign for his quick development and adjustment to the college game.
