Big Ten Basketball: Analyzing top 15 players from 2019 recruiting class
By Joey Loose
8. Makhi Mitchell (Maryland – C)
He’ll be playing next season with his twin brother Mahhel, but Makhi Mitchell is the more prestigious of the two new Maryland recruits. There were all kinds of offers for Mitchell, including DePaul, Georgia and Memphis, but he chose to stay close to home with the Terrapins. He’s the highest-rated freshmen for the Terrapins and the big man will help shape a very talented team.
Mitchell possesses a solid build that certainly helps his play in the paint. He’s a real battler down low, with the ability to post up, but also the athleticism to move around the court with ease. The 6’9 center still has some development left in this game. There’s the chance that he develops as a shooter, but that part of his game needs work. Regardless, he’s a dominant rebounder who’s a solid ball handler and could easily develop into a star for the Terrapins.
With Anthony Cowan Jr. and Jalen Smith on this roster, the Terrapins are going to be a force in Big Ten Basketball, let alone on the national stage. Mitchell’s presence gives them another dominant figure down low. Mitchell could find himself on an NBA roster in a few years if he can continue to develop his game and work consistent shooting into his entourage of abilities.
