NCAA Basketball: Analyzing 2 finalists for transfer guard Quentin Grimes
Texas A&M Aggies
With head coach Buzz Williams coming on board, the Aggies are looking for a major recruiting boost to compete with the other schools in the SEC. In a short time, he was able to bring in five different three-star recruits for the 2019 class. Three of them are shooting guards/wings but none of them are true ball handlers.
If Grimes has to sit out a season, Texas A&M will be just fine on the perimeter. They return their top three guards, including rising junior TJ Starks and senior Wendell Mitchell. Starks is the top passer on the team, averaging 3.5 apg while scoring 12 ppg. The fit would be interesting with Grimes though, as Starks shot just 22% from three-point range. He can’t play much off the ball so it could end up being a similar situation as with Kansa this past season.
But the reason for the interest from Grimes’ part has to be with Coach Williams, who did wonders at Virginia Tech with Justin Robinson. When he has quality guards to lead the offense, his teams tend to do very well. His ultimate goal is to have the ball in his hands and unless Starks declares early for the draft after his junior year, Grimes would fit better at Houston. But in terms of the preferred coaching staff, Texas A&M is hard to pass up.
Prediction: It’s a one-on-one battle with two programs who could use a player in Grimes who still has high potential as a college player. Houston has a clearer path to give the former Jayhawk the ball as much as he likes but the Aggies and Coach Williams has more appeal, being in a better conference overall. But since he came back to college and opted to transfer, I have a feeling that what matters most is the fit on the court with the players. For that reason, I believe that he’ll end up a Cougar.
