Tennessee Basketball: Analyzing the 2019 recruiting class
Josiah-Jordan James – Charleston, SC
CG | 6-foot-6 | 200 lbs | No. 21 overall
Easily the top-rated player in this class for Tennessee, Josiah James projects as an immediately impactful player in the backcourt. With an extremely well-built 6-foot-6 frame, James plays physically and he is quite dangerous when attacking the basket. He uses his strength remarkably well to force his way to the basket and finish through traffic while also showcasing plenty of ability as a playmaker. He might not be listed a point guard but he is certainly capable of creating for others when he drives to the basket or runs in transition.
With that said, James struggles when it comes to 3-point shooting. Although his lefty form is quite solid, he is yet to develop consistency from that distance. This could easily be the next step in the development of James as a player. With his size, strength, and athleticism, James is already prepared to be a lockdown defender at many positions at the college level. He clearly showcases plenty of two-way talent as the No. 21 overall prospect in this class.
Looking ahead to his role during this coming season, James looks like a lock to play big minutes. Even though he is listed as a combo guard, it seems relatively likely that James could start at point guard right away this season. Jordan Bone elected to head to the NBA after this past season and that left the slot open. Lamonte Turner and Jordan Bowden are the other potential options.
Tennessee’s incoming recruiting class is very intriguing. In addition to boasting one of the top newcomers in the entire nation, this class also features a few players that could either impact the program right away or develop throughout their time. Head coach Rick Barnes is clearly building a powerhouse in Knoxville.
