27. #3 LSU 79, #14 Yale 74 (Round of 64)
Despite a really poor start, the Yale Bulldogs fought hard against the Tigers and made this was a close game with some hot shooting late. LSU scored the game’s first 9 points and led by 16 at the half, but the Bulldogs hit their long-range shots late. Yale’s late run wasn’t enough as LSU hit their free throws. The Bulldogs got 24 points from Alex Copeland but Miye Oni had an awful shooting game (2-16 from the field). Skylar Mays hit those clutch free throws late and led the Tigers with 19 points while Naz Reid and Kavell Bigby-Williams added double-doubles. There was surely panic as LSU’s led evaporated late, but they had enough in the tank to upend the Ivy League champions late.
26. #7 Wofford 84, #10 Seton Hall 68 (Round of 64)
Despite the final score, this was a hard-fought win for the Terriers, the dazzling mid-major who burst onto the scene. The Terriers led by as many as 16 points in the first half before Seton Hall fought back to take the lead in the second. The Pirates were down just a single point with just over four minutes left when Wofford went on a large run to put the game away for good. A heroic 27-point effort by Myles Powell wasn’t enough for Seton Hall, buried by Wofford’s hot shooting. Fletcher Magee dropped 24 points, including 7 of Wofford 19 3-pointers, to lead the Terriers to their first NCAA Tournament victory. This game was not as lopsided as the final score revealed, Wofford simply made their shots late while Seton Hall didn’t have an answer.
25. #10 Iowa 79, #7 Cincinnati 72 (Round of 64)
Another year and another upset loss for the Bearcats on the Tourney’s opening weekend. An early 14-0 run gave the Bearcats a big lead, but the Hawkeyes clawed back into the game, grabbing their first lead a few minutes into the second half. A back and forth affair late, Iowa put the game away with an 8-0 run in the last three minutes, with Cincinnati just unable to get points on important possessions late. The Hawkeyes made 50% of their 3-pointers and got 20 points and 7 rebounds from Luka Garza. The efforts of Justin Jenifer (19 points) and Jarron Cumberland (18 points) weren’t enough as the offense disappeared late, giving Mick Cronin yet another early Tournament exit.
