18. #1 Virginia 53, #12 Oregon 49 (Sweet Sixteen)

The stifling defense of Virginia made enough of an impact to prevent the Ducks from another upset win. The Cavaliers watched their 8-point halftime lead disappear, but their defense locked down when it matter most. After tying the game at 45 with just over five minutes left, the Ducks would go scoreless for the next 5 minutes as Virginia’s defense locked down. The Ducks stayed in the game with hot shooting (36% from deep), led by Louis King (16 points). A team effort from the Cavaliers included 13-point effort from Ty Jerome, who hit the go-ahead 3-pointer late in the game.

17. #6 Maryland 79, #11 Belmont 77 (Round of 64)

Fresh off their first NCAA Tournament win in the First Four, the Bruins gave Maryland all they could handle, but just couldn’t pull off the upset in the end. The Bruins held a 10-point lead in the first half, but a 16-0 Maryland run turned the tide of the game. Dylan Windler had 35 points and 11 rebounds for the Bruins and missed a 3-pointer to win the game. The victorious Terrapins were led by Jalen Smith (19 points, 12 rebounds) and Darryl Morsell (18 points). An at-large selection from the OVC, Belmont certainly proved that they belonged in the field of 68, but came up just a few inches short of securing the upset win.

16. #2 Kentucky 62, #7 Wofford 56 (Round of 32)

Against this hot-shooting Terriers team, the Wildcats defense did exactly what they needed to do. They completely limited Fletcher Magee, who missed all 12 of his 3-point attempts for Wofford, who came up just short of pulling the second round upset. The Wildcats led for the final 14 minutes of the game and stifled every Wofford run. The Terriers got 19 points from Nathan Hoover, but couldn’t survive an awful performance by college basketball’s most prolific 3-point shooter. Reid Travis (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Ashton Hagans (12 points) starred for the Wildcats, who won this game on the defensive side of the ball.
