63. #9 Oklahoma 95, #8 Ole Miss 72 (Round of 64)

These two teams might have been evenly matched seed-wise, but Oklahoma’s hot shooting ignited them to victory that wasn’t close at all. The Sooners scored the game’s first 12 points and their lead was never lower than 8 for the rest of the game. The team shot 57.6% from the field, made their 3-pointers and got great efforts from Christian James (20 points), Rashard Odomes (20 points) and Kristian Doolittle (19 points, 15 rebounds). The Rebels didn’t play awfully, shooting nearly 50% themselves, but their defense just couldn’t handle the Sooners and they really fell out of this game early on.

62. #2 Michigan 74, #15 Montana 55 (Round of 64)

A year after their national title game appearance, the Wolverines had little trouble with Montana in their first game of the Tournament. They built a solid lead early and led most of the game by double-digits, quickly erasing any thoughts of a monumental upset for the Grizzlies. The Wolverines made 49% of their shots and did more than enough defensively to quell Montana, limiting the Grizzlies to just 25% from long-range. Michigan’s Charles Matthews led all scorers with 22 points and added 10 rebounds in the winning effort. Sayeed Pridgett put up 17 points for the Grizzlies, but the team couldn’t keep up with Michigan.

61. #5 Auburn 89, #4 Kansas 75 (Round of 32)

The final margin was 14 points, but Auburn absolutely dominated this game, giving Bruce Pearl an impressive Sweet Sixteen appearance (just the beginning for the Tigers). The Auburn lead was 51-25 at the halftime break and they coasted after that, making 52.5% of their shots from the field and forcing the Jayhawks into bad shots and silly mistakes. Bryce Brown (25 points) shot the ball extremely well and the Tigers hit their 3-pointers early and often. The Jayhawks season came to an end despite 25 points and 10 rebounds from Dedric Lawson. They simply didn’t have an answer for Auburn’s early burst and the deficit was far too large in the second half.
