48. #3 Purdue 61, #14 Old Dominion 48 (Round of 64)

While the Boilermakers didn’t exactly blow past the Monarchs, they did enough to win their opening round game. It took 15 minutes for Purdue to begin to pull away, holding a sizeable lead for most of the second half. Old Dominion pulled to within 9 in the final two minutes, but Carsen Edwards made sure the game was never in doubt. Edwards put up 26 points while the efforts of Ahmad Caver (19 points) weren’t enough for the Monarchs. Old Dominion didn’t play sloppy and made their free throws, they just couldn’t match punch for punch with the Boilermakers throughout this whole game.

47. #11 Belmont 81, #11 Temple 70 (First Four)

It may have been an odd pair of teams in the Last Four In, but the Bruins certainly proved they belonged with their first NCAA Tournament victory. The Bruins held a six-point halftime edge in a back and forth game. Belmont grabbed and held the lead for the final ten minutes; the Owls unable to cut into the lead late. Fran Dunphy’s coaching career came to an end, while Belmont’s 52% shooting paced them to the victory. Kevin McClain’s 29 points led the way for the Bruins, who made their free throws down the stretch to end Temple’s season.

46. #12 Murray State 83, #5 Marquette 64 (Round of 64)

Anybody unfamiliar with Ja Morant got quite the taste in this first round action. The Racers led big early, though Marquette tightened the game just before the half, but Morant really went off late. Murray State dominated the second half, building their lead and winning by 19. Morant had 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, a rare triple-double in the NCAA Tournament. Marquette got 26 points from Markus Howard (who went just 9-27 from the field), but didn’t get enough offensive to hang with the hot-shooting Racers. Murray State made 53.6% of their shots while Morant got his shot to shine on the national stage.
