Maryland Basketball: Breaking down Terrapins 2019 recruiting class
C Chol Marial – Chandler, AZ
3-star | 7-foot-2 | 230 pounds | No. 172 overall
Chol Marial is yet another big man prospect for the Maryland Terrapins and easily the most polarizing player in this year’s recruiting class. Standing somewhere between 7-foot-2 and 7-foot-3, it’s not hard to imagine why there is so much chatter surrounding Marial. And just to think, that’s based on his height alone. A native of Sudan, Marial moved to the United States in 2014 and played most recently at Compass Prep in Chandler.
When you turn the film on, there is definitely a lot to like about Marial. His 7-foot-11 wingspan gives him an advantage over opposing players game in and game out. He could definitely step in right away and become a rim protector, as well as an above the rim player on the offensive end. Marial has also shown flashes of becoming a perimeter threat. It would not be ideal for him to play outside often, but with the way the game is being played now, it would be a nice weapon to employ.
The biggest cause for pause with Marial is his durability. Sure, he has the height and length, but he also has a very slender frame. The Maryland athletic training team will certainly want to help him bulk up and fill out his frame in order for him to be able to withstand the rigors of a college basketball season, well into March. Marial picked the Terps over other offers, including Arizona State, Florida State and Iowa.
