NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 2020 F Isaiah Todd’s final five
By Brian Rauf
Michigan Wolverines
Michigan is the newest school in the mix for Todd and he put them in this final group for one reason – Juwan Howard.
Like Hardaway, Howard is a former NBA All-Star who is trying his hand at coaching on the collegiate level. The Wolverines were a national power under former head coach John Beilein, but Howard is expected to make them more relevant in high-level recruiting battles. Their appearance on Todd’s list is proof that it is working – at least initially.
Like Memphis, Michigan has to win this year if they’re going to have any chance at landing Todd. Some critics have doubts about Howard’s coaching ability because he has no collegiate coaching experience and he has never been a head coach on any level. He’s going to have to prove himself to the fan base and to recruits alike.
However, Howard worked with big men throughout his career in the NBA both as a player mentor and for six seasons as an assistant with the Miami Heat. Todd would get that tutelage and has a chance to be the first real star of the Juwan Howard era. He’d be the face of the program, even if – on paper – the Wolverines seem to be the least talented team of the five.
