NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 2020 F Greg Brown’s final five
By Brian Rauf
Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns are the favorite and the wildcard all rolled into one in Brown’s recruitment.
On the plus side, they’re in his hometown, giving him the opportunity to play high-level basketball in front of his family and friends. They’ve also produced a first-round pick in four of the last five years, including three lottery picks.
On the down side, head coach Shaka Smart hasn’t been able to build a consistent winner in Austin. There’s a legitimate chance he may not be the head coach when Brown were to step on campus and, if he is, there’s no guarantee Brown will be a part of a successful team.
Brown also has a different skill set than those first-round picks Texas has recently produced. All four of them (Myles Turner, Jarrett Allen, Mo Bamba, Jaxson Hayes) are post players and, while all are elite athletes, Brown has a greater perimeter repertoire than any of them. Smart hasn’t had a player with his size and versatility, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to use him.
Brown has the kind of rare talent that will allow him to make an immediate impact where ever he goes. That said, the level of impact he could have at each school varies. All five of his finalists have something different to offer him, but all would be ecstatic is Brown is wearing their uniform during the 2020-21 season.
