Oklahoma Basketball: Breaking down Sooners projected 2019-20 rotation
By Trenton Corn
Shooting Guard
Minutes allocation (40 total): Austin Reaves (20), Jamal Bieniemy (12), Alondes Williams (8)
Reaves
Reaves adds not only a smooth shooting stroke, but he has just as smooth of a handle and can make plays in areas other than the three-point line. In coach Krugers offense, the 2 guard isn’t just a spot-up shooter, in fact, nobody is really. There is tons of movement in the offense, and Reaves will have the ball in his hands a lot with the freedom to make plays. He will not only bang some threes for this team, but can put the ball on the floor and get to the rack, and has a nice mid-range jumper. With the ball in his hands more, I expect his assists average to also be higher than his 2 a game the last time we saw him play basketball for Wichita State.
Bieniemy
Bieniemy will get some valuable minutes at the 2 as well this year. I’m excited to see Bieniemy shooting more threes with more minutes playing off the ball, and the potential lineup with Bieniemy and De’Vion Harmon playing together will have the ball flying all over the place with two capable passers together. Bieniemy isn’t starting this season, but will still be an important piece of this Sooner’s puzzle.
Williams
Alondes Williams won’t get many minutes in this backcourt this season but will get a few, and once he gets in will have a green light to shoot the ball and make plays. Williams, I expect to hit about 2 threes a game this year and has the ability to get hot, earn more minutes and carry this team a couple of times this year, but he is more than just a shooter. At 6’5 220 pounds, he is strong for his size and has the capability to create space and a shot for himself, and can make plays for others as well. He’s a well-rounded kid who can shoot, rebound, pass, and defend multiple positions thanks to his is 6’5 220 frame. All those things he will bring to this team is why coach Kruger will give him hard-earned minutes.
