NCAA Basketball: 6 stars of mid-major backcourts for 2019-20 season
Grayson Murphy – Belmont Bruins
So, not only is the next player on this list the only one not to average double digits last season, but he is also the youngest, as he is just entering his sophomore season. Grayson Murphy is a 6-2 sophomore from Franklin, Tennessee who averaged 6.5 assists for the Belmont Bruins last season during a year which saw the program win its first NCAA Tournament game under legendary and now retired head coach Rick Byrd.
After redshirting in 2018, Murphy was inserted into the starting line up for Belmont from the word go last season and he started in all 33 games, averaging 9.6 points and 4.4 rebounds to go along with his assist totals, while shooting 49% from the field and while he only took 76 three-pointers on the year, he made over 35% of them. With leading scorers Dylan Windler and Kevin McClain having departed, even more of the ball-handling and the scoring onus will fall upon Murphy this season.
The Casey Alexander era is about to begin at Belmont and the Bruins will now be Murphy’s team to run. Last season he did a little bit of everything for Belmont, and this season he can do, even more, vaulting him into the conversation of the best guards in the country you may have never heard of.
