10. Miami Ohio Red Hawks

Coming off a 15-17 season the Red Hawks come in next in our power rankings. Another team that seems to have a lot of returners back for this year and another coach returning for his third year with the program in Jack Owens. Leading scorer Nike Sibande (yes, Nike) returns for his junior year and was a member of the All-Mac team, he’ll look to build on that success and should be one of the best players in the MAC again this upcoming year. Miami will see fellow Ohio teams in conference play as well as Wright State who will make a trip to Oxford in early November.

9. Akron Zips

Funnily enough, despite the Akron Zips finishing last year with a 17-16 season, the Zips were ranked in the top 25 in the country in points per game allowed. Last years top scorer Daniel Utomi transferred this summer to join USC, leaving 5’8 point guard Loren Jackson as the Zips highest-scoring returner. If the Zips have another good defensive year and can find more production with their returners and new Juco transfer Cam Reece, the Zips can and will be competitive in the MAC. Continuing on with our theme with the head coaches, John Groce also returns for his third season in charge of the Zips.

8. Kent State Golden Flashes

A team that actually saw some postseason play last year, believe it or not, Kent State actually made a first-round exit in the CIT to Louisiana Monroe last season. Coming off a 22 win season last year we saw the Golden Flashes take down SEC school Vanderbilt. Their leading scorer Jaylin Walker who put up almost 22 points per game is going to be very difficult to replace for a team who only returns two double-digit scorers. Lots of unanswered questions with Kent State making it difficult to judge what kind of season they’re going to have.
