4. Mark Turgeon (Maryland)

In his eight years with the Terrapins, Turgeon certainly hasn’t replicated the success of predecessor Gary Williams, who won the program’s first national title back in 2002. On the other hand, he’s steadied the program through their transition from ACC to Big Ten and has plenty of success in his coaching background.

Turgeon played his college ball at Kansas under Larry Brown and would return after graduation as an assistant, playing a role in their 1988 title team. He would also spend time under Brown with the 76ers before beginning a long head coaching career. He spent two seasons at Jacksonville State and seven at Wichita State, leading the Shockers to the Sweet Sixteen in 2006. He spent four seasons at Texas A&M, leading the Aggies to the NCAA Tournament in each season. Turgeon’s run in the Big 12 was impressive, and his 97-40 mark with the Aggies was enough to land him the Maryland job in 2011.

In total, Turgeon has a single Sweet Sixteen and a foursome of Tournament appearances with the Terrapins. After a slow start, the last few seasons have been a step in the right direction. Players like Melo Trimble have come through the program as recruiting has stepped up recently. Turgeon’s had this team in the top 5 of the Big Ten in four of the last five seasons, an impressive feat for a new team in the league.

Consistent success at Maryland is the expectation for Turgeon, but has he achieved this? The Terrapins are 121-49 since entering the Big Ten. However, making the second weekend just once in that time span stands as a disappointment to some fans. It’s undeniable that Turgeon has done a good job with this program, but he’s a deep run or two from doing a great job at Maryland. That being said, his entire bodywork is impressive, especially as Texas A&M’s program really fell off in the last few seasons.
