UNC Tar Heels

If we assume that incoming star freshmen Cole Anthony produces how we think he’s going to produce, the Tar Heels are going to need a new primary ball-handler after this season. And while four-star recruit Anthony Harris is a good player in his own right, the program is likely going to be after another five-star guy in the 2020 class to add certainty.

Remember Caleb Love? He and Thompson have a similar set of finalists, with UNC going after both of them. Love is viewed as a possible Louisville lean at this stage of his recruitment but don’t count out Roy Williams and his ability to land the best of the best. But even if the Tar Heels can’t get him, they’re in play for top-30 guard DJ Steward, along with a pair of top-10 overall forwards in Ziaire Williams and Greg Brown.

The biggest key may be what happens with another five-star guard in Jaden Springer. The 6’5 scorer from Florida has been viewed as a UNC lean and could commit before the season starts. That would then be a tough situation for Thompson to join, as both players are ball-dominant.

Would I dismiss UNC if signs show significant interest from Thompson? No. However, most of the noise with this recruitment has been in the mid-west. I have a feeling that the Tar Heels will target other guards harder in the coming months.
